The health of the slum dwellers is a major concern for ASMITA. For the past many years, we have been reaching out to the malnourished, elderly, pregnant women, newborn babies, and the weak with medical camps, medicines, balanced diet, awareness programs, food kits, vaccination, etc. ASMITA undertakes the following programs.
Pregnancy and Post Pregnancy care
Invariably every woman in the slum is anemic, malnourished, and lacks awareness about self-care and child care. Now with the Covid -19, the situation is still worsened. When a lady is pregnant she needs proper food but their low-income status prevents them from having the proper diet. The children born to them are sure to be malnourished. ASMITA with the support of Manos Unidas caters to the needs of pregnant and feeding mothers. We provide them with proper diet, medicines, awareness programs, and leadership programs, link them with ASHA/and ANM, and link with the nearest PHC to avail government facilities.
Malnutrition Alleviation Programme
A major problem in the slums is the increasing number of malnourishment among slum children. ASMITA identifies malnourished children, conducts medical camps for children who are weak, and malnourished provides vitamins/medicines, and nutritious items. Critical cases are admitted to hospitals. At present we support 40 such children from the slums.
Menstrual Hygiene in the Slums of Varanasi
Most of the adolescent girls in the slums lack awareness of menstrual hygiene. They undertake unhygienic practices during their periods. Most of them do not use pads. Our target is that by end of this year 85% of the adolescent girls in the slums start using sanitary pads. We conduct regular meetings with adolescent girls, share issues related to periods, conduct medical camps, link them with doctors, and support them with sanitary pads.
