A slum is a place where unwanted, neglected people finally land up. They have no land, no identity documents, and remain illiterate generation after generation. Varanasi has 200 above such slums and around one and a half lakh people reside here. Most of the people engaged in rag picking, scrap collection, scavenging, etc. including women and children.
