Non Formal education in the slums

Cause Description

A slum is a place where unwanted, neglected people finally land up. They have no land, no identity documents, and remain illiterate generation after generation. Varanasi has 200 above such slums and around one and a half lakh people reside here. Most of the people engaged in rag picking, scrap collection, scavenging, etc. including women and children. Parents prefer to take their children to work than send them to school. Their childhood is lost by the time they realize their state of being. This is one of the major reasons why there are lots of human rights violations in the slums. Our survey in January 2022 finds that 73% of the children never enrolled themselves in any schools, and 81.5% of slum dwellers do not know how to read and write. We find that only education at the primary level can change their fate. Through education alone, the future of these children can be secured and hence bringing quality changes to the lives of the slum dwellers. To address this problem, we have opened 8 non-formal education centers in major slums in Varanasi catering to 220 children this year. They are taught the basics and are encouraged to enter into formal schooling at the end of the year. We wish if you could support us in one of our centers it would greatly support us.
